IC-Rated Recessed Lights

"IC" (which refers to Underwriter Laboratories code 1598 for luminaires) stands for "insulation contact" and is a rating for new construction and remodel housings used in the ceilings of homes and offices with insulation in the attic. This housing is used to protect structures from fire hazards as it keeps flammable material away from hot lighting fixtures. While not as critical for LED or CFL platforms, it is a vital safeguard for incandescent halogen lamps which burn at higher temperatures than standard incandescent bulbs. Note that IC rated recessed lights tend to be located closer to the trim, thereby increasing chances of glare. Also, in order to stay within code, manufacturers of IC recessed lights will limit the wattage of fixtures that use incandescent halogen lamps. Also be aware that some recessed cans are listed for both IC and non-IC use -- each application is rated with different lamps and wattages. Florida residents should know that local codes call for the exclusive use of IC rated new construction and remodel housings. With dozens of kits, trims, cans and retrofit modules, Destination Lighting is your source for your IC recessed lighting needs. Finished in black, grey and white tones, many are also rated for use in wet/damp locations like bathrooms, showers and outdoors. We have a wide selection of LED cans/housings, some Energy Star rated, that meet the needs of most applications. You'll find famous brands from respected manufacturers such as Juno, Sea Gull, WAC and many others.
