Pendant Lighting – Orwell by Golden Lighting
Pendant lighting is a fun and functional way to add character to any room in your home. Destination Lighting carries over twenty-thousand pendants and we’ve selected some of our favorite styles for every budget.
Types of Pendant Lighting
While we are focusing mainly on pendants and mini-pendants in this post, there are a few other styles to be aware of.
- Pendants are single hanging light fixtures that provide ambient or focused lighting.
- Mini pendants are smaller versions of pendants.
- Multi-light pendants incorporate a group of individual lights into a single fixture.
- Island pendants are similar to multi-light pendants, but the lights are arranged in a row that provides even light to a work surface.
- Drum pendants have large, cylindrical shades and are a source of ambient light.
- Billiard fixtures provide illumination for pool tables and often feature retro-style glass.

Fixture Sizing for Your Space
To find the proper size pendant lighting for the area it will illuminate, use the overall dimensions of the room and a simple equation.
For an open space, measure the length and width of your room and add them together, every foot measured in the room equals one inch of fixture diameter.
- Example: Your room has a length of 12 feet and a width of 10 feet, together that equals 22 feet so the perfect pendant size for that room is 22 inches wide. You may also use a group of pendants that have a combined width of 22 inches for this space.
For a table or island, measure the width of the surface and subtract 12 inches to determine the proper width for your pendant or group of pendants.
- Example: Your table is 36 inches wide, subtract 12 inches to find that the perfect pendant to hang over this space is 24 inches wide. You may also use a group of pendants that have a combined width of 24 inches for this space.
Keep in mind, this is meant to be a guideline to help you choose your lighting and not a strict rule. What is most important is that you love your lighting and how it looks in your home.

Pendant Positioning
As you search for the perfect pendant lighting for your home, it is important to consider fixture placement.
- Pendants should be 24 to 30 inches above work surfaces to keep an open sight line across your table or island when seated.
- When hanging multiple fixtures in a row, the widest part of your pendants should be spaced 18 to 30 inches apart.
- In open spaces, hang pendants so the bottom of the fixture is at least 7 feet from the floor to leave headroom.
- In the bedroom, hang pendants between 18 and 24 inches above a bedside table.
- In a doorway, leave 6 inches of space between the bottom of the pendant and the top of the door.
- Leave at least 4 inches between the widest part of the pendant and any adjacent walls or structural elements.
*Pendants use chains, cords, cables, or rods for support which can almost always be adjusted to the proper hanging length.
