How to Fit an Arc Lamp in Your Space

02/08/2023

At Destination Lighting, we love arc lamps. Combining one-of-a-kind style and excellent lighting opportunities, these big lamps make a difference wherever they’re placed. Arc lamps are a beautiful addition to living rooms and home offices, but due to their larger size, they are sometimes difficult to implement in certain spaces. Fortunately, there are ways to get around this problem – let’s take a look at what they are.

What Is an Arc Lamp?

An arc lamp is a large lamp that extends from a base on the floor all the way up to the ceiling – or close to it. The tallest arc lamps usually stand around eight feet tall. However, unlike most standing lamps, arc lamps have a gooseneck design that brings the light itself lower than the maximum height, allowing it to hang in place from the long arc of the metal stem.

Popularized in the ‘60s, these lamps come in many shapes and use many different kinds of bulbs and lampshades, ranging from spherical lampshades with incandescent bulbs to LED arc lamps that feature no shade at all. You’ll also find arc lamps with three lights and more. Due to the popularity and striking appearance of arc lamps, designers have been coming up with interesting versions of them since their inception.

How Do I Fit an Arc Lamp in my Space?

So you’ve decided that you want to add an arc lamp to your home. How should you go about doing this? First, you’ll need to measure the dimensions of your living room, home office, bedroom or wherever you plan to place the lamp. As arc lamps can be quite tall, you’ll want to make sure that there is at least one foot of space between the arc lamp’s highest point and the ceiling – otherwise it will be difficult to maneuver the lamp, and it will appear boxed in wherever it’s placed.

It’s also worth keeping in mind what type of arc lamp you’d like to install as well as the lampshades that you want to use. You’ll need to verify that the lampshade style you want will be properly elevated above your bed, sofa or chair before purchasing. The base is generally quite small in comparison to the rest of the lamp, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a location on your floor where the lamp can be placed. This can be anywhere from in the corner of your room to behind a dresser.

Where Do I Put an Arc Lamp?

Arc lamps can act as a centerpiece of your room due to their large size and unique design, and as a result, you’ll want to consider the arc lamp before you start decorating. These types of lamps work especially well for reading nooks or areas where you can use the arc lamp as the central lighting. Consider living room or office corners or anywhere in your home where the natural shape of the arc lamp stands out the most. Arc lamps can also be used in the center part of a room, but due to their size, you’ll likely want the arc of the lamp to be over furniture to avoid bumping into it.

Here are a few ideas for arc lamp locations in your home:

  • Next to a lounge chair in your bedroom
  • Above your desk in a home office
  • Next to the sofa in your living room
  • Beside a dining room table
  • Above a reading area

With these tips, you can integrate an arc lamp into your home design with ease. If you have any further questions about arc lamps, ask the Destination Lighting team – our experts have many unique ideas for how to add an arc lamp to a variety of spaces.
